Logs from the Tall Ship, Canaries

25/01/2012 LOG

Good Evening from the Valley of the King.

(Valley Gran Rey)

Today’s activity have been a bus trip up in the mountains of Gomeira, small crooked roads and lots of ice-cream. Being in the bus was like a six hour long roller coaster ride and we all crossed our fingers when a vehicle came around a corner. In the bus we had a little guide with us who, with precision and jokes, told us about everything in the surrounding areas. We saw everything from mountain goats to churches and never ending steep walls.

The bus brought us home just in time for dinner and after that the most of Mt. Crew went out to the city. Meanwhile Victor had watch and waited for his turn to leave Älva and go to the village. When we were done we returned back to the boat, took a quick shower and walked with Victor towards the village. On our way there we met Jonathan and some other guys on their way back to Älva. We continued to the village where we ate french fries on the beach. When we headed back we saw Jonathan on the dockside he was sitting with a dog named Postis-Per.

That was all for today and tomorrow Älva is leaving La Gomeira towards La Palma.

We hope you’re doing good in the cold at home. Now we better go get some rest before we take the night shift.

23/01/2012 Student LOG

Today we woke up at 7:15 and had breakfast which was prepared by the Alpha team, this consisted of cheese, ham, eggs, bread and cereal. After breakfast, we English students were placed into teams, either Alpha, Bravo, Charlie or Delta.

This was followed by cleaning the boat, and food preparation. We then had a safety talk and a familiarization session, where we learned different things about the boat and what we should do in an emergency, all the students had to get into the survival suits, we looked like spacemen in our big orange suits. This was followed by dinner which was prepared by the Alpha team and chef Tony.

We had an excursion to the Volcano, Mount Teide, it took us an hour and a half to get there and we then had some time to explore the mountains, which offered breathtaking views and opportunities for photos.

We returned to the harbor and had dinner which was beef, potatoes and salad, this was
followed by a talk about when we were going to leave port. At around 19.00 hours we set sail with all four teams pitching in to open up the sails. The Alpha and Delta team opened up the jibs and missile sail. Once set up, different individuals took to doing different things such as part of the Delta team taking up watch and Ryan, Gustaf, Jamie and William wrote this log.

P.S. Within the North Liverpool Academy we have a system which includes gems (keys for success) for different aspects of life, these include problem solving, determination, teamwork, creativity along with two others, today we believe we have demonstrated three of these gems which have been team work as we have worked alongside each other both English and Swedish students, we have also demonstrated determination as we have wanted to succeed at the tasks that have been set for us. The last gem we believe we have demonstrated is problem solving as we have solved the problems we experienced in our task along with beginning to solve the problem of the language barrier between the two
nationalities.

5nM southeast of Santa Cruz de Tenirife

Speed: 5 knots

Destination: La Gomera

Yesterday I flew with 23 students from Marina läroverket to the south airport in Teneriffa. The students behaved excellent and we landed on schedule. After 1 hour by bus we arrived to the port and embarked Älva. Tony made lunch for and everything was perfect. The rest of the class and the English crew arrived and after some information and presentation of the crew the four watch teams where shown to their cabins. After dinner everybody went out to see the town.

The night watch did a good job  and after a silent night we woke up for a busy day. Normal morning routines and security educations led by the crew. The bus arrived after lunch for a five hour excursion to Teide, the famous volcano. Everything went well and we arrived back to Älva in time for dinner.

As I wright this we are sailing through the night in a nice breeze. The deck watch steer the boat, some students are watching a film, others play cards and some try to sleep. The mood onboard is very good and this journey has started excellent.
